District Chorus Concert Rescheduled Due To Weather Concerns

DALLAS TOWNSHIP – Officials with the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association cancelled the last day of the District 9 chorus festival and rescheduled Friday’s concert to 7 p.m. Thursday night, due to safety concerns over an anticipated snowstorm.

The district chorus concert, which was held inside the Dallas High School auditorium, featured more than 160 students from 33 school districts in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Wyoming and Susquehanna counties.

PMEA District 9 President Nino Bennici told Newswatch 16 that last day of the chorus festival was cancelled and the concert was rescheduled because officials did not want to risk students and their families driving to the concert doing a snowstorm on Friday night.

Ammonia Leak in Hazleton

Emergency crews were called to a bakery on South Cedar Street Friday for a reported ammonia leak.

Officials said the leak was found around noon.

They had trouble stopping the leak completely and had to call for help from a company in Philadelphia.

"What we ended up recommending is the residents nearby to shelter in places inside their homes, close their door, close their windows, don't come outside unless necessary," said Stephen Bekanich of Luzerne County EMA.

Crews said a federal agricultural inspector made a surprise visit to Michael's European Specialties Bakery on South Cedar Street and found a tank leaking ammonia.

People living and working in the area are asked to stay inside. However, officials did say an air test showed a small amount of ammonia in the air.
