LUZERNE COUNTY — Hazleton Police say It could take weeks for detectives to determine if the injuries that landed a two month-old girl in a hospital are the result of an accident or abuse.
Chief Frank DeAndrea tells Newswatch 16 the infant was taken to the hospital yesterday, but he will not say where or when the baby suffered the injuries that resulted in bleeding in her brain and swelling.
Luzerne County Children and Youth Services has taken a second child from the family as a precaution Chief DeAndrea added. He also says detectives cannot get straight answers from the little girl’s family.
“We owe an explanation to this two-month-old who can’t tell us what happened, as well as to the community and the family,” DeAndrea said. “We will do the investigation until we can figure out what happened.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a caretaker, or a grandmother, a mother, a boyfriend, a doctor. Anyone that has any knowledge of this infant and her health status or her home condition.”
The two month-old girl was last listed in critical condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown.
Detectives with the Hazleton Police Department are accepting anonymous tips on this case.
