National Guard Unit Gets New Company Commander

National Guard Unit Gets New Company Commander

The West Pittston National Guard unit announced a new company commander last month.

Captain James L. Cameron received command of Delta Company 1st Battalion 109th Combined Arms Battalion during a ceremony on March 25th of Fort Indiantown Gap. The armor company, based in West Pittston, primarily trains on M1 Abrams tanks and has participated in multiple deployments in the past 10 years.

Cameron enlisted in the Army in 1991 and joined the National Guard in 1999.  He continued as a non-commissioned officer in several occupational specialties and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant.

University Students Offer Free Tax Assistance

Wilkes University accounting students will offer free income tax assistance.

Accounting students will offer free tax assistance to the public through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (vita) program.

The service will be offered February 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th from 9:30 a.m. To 12:30 p.m.

Flu Shot Clinic in Hazleton

A Flu Shot Clinic will be held at the Hazleton Health and Wellness Center, lower level conference room, on Saturday, October 23rd from 9 a.m. until noon. 

There will be another clinic on Monday, October 25th from noon until 5:00 p.m.

The Hazleton General Home Care will bill Medicare and Blue Cross of NEPA/First Priority health; all others will be charged $25 payable by check or cash.

Food Drive to Benefit Greater Pittston Food Pantry

There is a food drive this weekend to benefit the Greater Pittston Food Pantry. 

The benefit is this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pittston Italian Club on Oak Street.

Admission to the food drive is a donated food item.

For each donated item people will receive three tickets for basket raffles. Tickets will not be sold they will only be given in exchange for the donated items.

There will be many vendors including PartyLite, Avon, Lia Sophia, Pampered Chef, local crafters and much more.

Some requested items for the food drive are crackers, cereal, peanut butter, rice, jelly, tuna fish, diapers, toothpaste and shampoo. 

Volleyball Team Holds Benefit Game for Cancer

A high school volleyball team in Luzerne County hoped to spike breast cancer Tuesday night.

Newswatch 16 stopped by Dallas Area High School where the Mountaineers' girls volleyball team held a benefit game.

This is the third year for the fundraising event by the girls volleyball team.
