Food Bank Needs Volunteers For Holiday | News
A Luzerne County food bank is getting ready to feed over 7,000 needy people this Thanksgiving.
The problem is, they are in need of volunteers to help with the massive distribution.
Hundreds of shopping bags are ready to provide a needy family with a delicious Thanksgiving meal. Thanks to the Weingard Food Bank, the Wilkes-Barre CEO, and your donations to WNEP-TV's feed a friend each family who signs up will receive stuffing, pie mix, and of course a turkey.
"When you go into the holiday, the demand is greater than day to day to put together a Thanksgiving project to thousands of families it's impossible to do that with the staff on hand," said Rich Kutz, director of Weinberg Food Bank.
Newswatch 16 caught up with a group of students volunteering from Wilkes University.
"We didn't realize how big of a deal this is when we came here today, we came for a little extra community service, since it's near Thanksgiving. We would do some service and its really great, everything that's going on today, a lot more than we expected it to be," said Valentina Beneski, Wilkes University student.
Inside each of the boxes are hundreds of turkeys. By the end of Thanksgiving the CEO will have handed out more than 7,000 to the community.
Volunteers are needed especially from now through Thanksgiving.
