Gunshots Injure Two in Wilkes-Barre

A teenager is in intensive care after he and another teen were shot at a playground in Luzerne County, according to police.

It happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday along Wilkes-Barre Boulevard, near the South Street Bridge in Wilkes-Barre.

According to Wilkes-Barre detectives, two 17 year olds were shot at the playground near the Boulevard Townhomes. Both went to the hospital. One boy was treated and released. The other boy was shot in the back and is in intensive care and scheduled for surgery.

Hours after the shooting, Sheona McClure took her two children for a walk near the scene which happens to only be a few blocks away from Hill Street, where 14-year old Tyler Winstead was shot and killed back in April.

Mcclure is winstead’s cousin and this latest shooting left her rattled.

Sandusky: Defense Analysis

Jerry Sandusky is on trial, accused of sexually assaulting 10 boys. Some of those accusers have already testified, describing Sandusky as a father figure who used his influence to befriend and then molest the boys.

“Sandusky and his lawyer, they have a tough road, they have the whole country looking at that case, many people have already presumed that he is guilty, so it is a tough fight,” said Al Flora, a defense attorney in Luzerne County.

Flora has defended high-profile clients, from convicted spree killer George Banks of Luzerne County, to convicted double murderer Henry Stubbs, to most recently, former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella, convicted in a juvenile detention scandal.

Like some of Flora’s clients, Sandusky is expected to take the stand in his own defense.

Construction Projects Underway in Plains Township

If you have driven on Route 315 near Mohegan Sun Casino in Luzerne County, you may have noticed a couple of large construction projects underway.

Workers put the finishing touches on a new Dunkin’ Donuts on Route 315 in Plains Township. Across the road, another construction project will bring a hotel and two fast food restaurants.

“It`s exploding! There`s a lot happening here. There`s a new Dunkin’ Donuts coming in, a micro hotel coming, it`s exploding all around us,” said Gene Cosklo.

Cosklo owns several plazas near the construction sites and said at least in this part of Luzerne County, the economy is booming, in part because of the location next to the Mohegan Sun Casino.

“It means business. There are more people. There are people looking for space. We get probably five to eight phone calls a day looking for space. Last year and two years ago we would get five a month,” added Cosklo.

The Skinny On Bee Swarms ...

When these two members of the Chestnuthill Township Historical Society were cleaning up around the township-owned Merwinsburg Hotel, they came across a swarm of bees in a tree. Bees swarm when a hive gets overcrowded. They will find a place to wait, such as this tree, as scouts go out looking for a permanent home. During this time they are non-aggressive because they do not have a nest to protect... Read More
